[Mobile Gaming] How the Nyan Cat led to the death knell for a popular mobile game- the downfall of RWBY Amity Arena.

Note: Many of the links are to the Amity Arena Library, a website devoted to the game which includes tracking the history of it through patchnotes and a running history of what cards entered and left the meta. Their website was a valuable resource for this post.
Mobile gaming has taken off like a wildfire since the advent of the smartphone boosted the average processing power a phone could carry. Initially it took the form of crossing over older, more easily runnable games onto the mobile market to... mixed success, but in recent years we've seen both the West and East use mobile gaming to replace the old fashioned movie tie in game. It's easily accessable, has a much wider reach than consoles or PC, you can take it on the go and standards are inherently lower for mobile games than they are a full 60 dollar game.
Since the 2010s, mobile gaming has shifted to what's called the "Freemium" module. The game itself is free to download and start playing, but is insideously designed with obnoxious paywalls or artificial limiters put in place to limit how much you can play each day. If the game is part of a pre-existing franchise, additional money can be made through a premium currency or a chance to obtain high-powered units by rolling a slot machine random chance mechanic. And thus, gacha gaming was born. This sub has had several threads in the past on high profile gacha games, such as the monolithic Fate Grand/Order, Pokemon Go or Genshin Impact. One of the more popular things to roll for in gachas as a consequence is wallpapers for your homescreen, especially for high-grade units as they're usually animated to move a little bit on the homescreen. Today we're looking a low to mid-tier gacha game that rose and fell with the advent of one catgirl. Let's talk RWBY.
RWBY is an online web anime made by Rooster Teeth focusing on four prospective monster hunters who get embroiled in a world-spanning shadow war. It's of debatable quality in matters of animation, combat, voice acting, story, worldbuilding, romance, and it's kind of a little racist if I'm being honest, but one of the major positives of RWBY is that the series tends to have good character design. Series creator Monty Oum set in the guidelines for the show while making it that most if not every design should be made to be cosplay friendly, hence why most of the outfits have things most costume designers haven't heard of like... pockets. And Rooster Teeth, above all else, likes making money. So they know people like RWBY's character designs, enough so that in 2017 plans were made to release a gacha game themed around RWBY called Amity Arena, which would be developed by Korean company NHN Entertainment.
Amity Arena is a PvP tower defense game. Each player controls two turrets and a tower and has three minutes to use units themed from the show to destroy the other player's structures. Whoever took out more wins, destroying a tower is an instant victory. When the game launched, it had three tiers for units- Common (generally held for mooks or low-tier characters in the show), Rare (roughly protagonist-level or elite mooks go here) and Epic (High tier characters usually with an active ability that did lots of damage or stopped enemies in their tracks). The game launched in October 2018 to generally positive reviews from both mobile game players and RWBY fans alike. Fans were happy to get a lot of new official art for the characters in the game and the base gameplay loop was fun. Criticism at the time was largely themed around the lack of content besides PVP matches and some issues with the meta but overall, the launch went well. Each month, the developers would add new units, including popular characters like Neopolitian, Cinder Fall, Zwei the dog, and more.
But everything changed with February 20th 2019, which introduced Neon Katt, the titular catgirl (RWBY characters are themed around fairytales, except for Neon, who is themed around Nyan Cat, and her partner Flynt Coal, who is themed off a potentially racist joke made by Rooster Teeth).
Neon is a character from RWBY Volume 3 who's part of a team that RWBY face during a tournament arc. Her partner, Flynt Coal, was part of the game at launch, and Neon would join him a few months later. Neon in the show is a cocky fighter who taunts the heroes and zips around on rollarskates, which in-game is represented by Neon skating towards the nearest enemy structure to her and hitting it, while all units within a radius of Neon are taunted and provoked into attacking her above all other targets unless they-selves are coded to hit structures. On its own, not a bad idea for a unit, but Neon came with four big caveats:
From the word go, Neon is an unpopular unit; she's clearly overbalanced and elements such as the Disco Bear glitch have players thinking she'll have to get knocked down in a nerf- she'll either be made slower, more expensive, or able to die pre-hitting a structure, right?
Neon doesn't show up in the next patch. Instead, before she's fixed, an entire new class of units called Legendaries are introduced, and this is where the game goes full gacha. Legendaries were meant to represent the highest tier characters in the game, the ones who were either the most popular characters or the highest-tier fighters in the show. Or in some cases, the popular ships such as combo cards for White Rose (Ruby/Weiss), Bumblebee (Blake/Yang) and Flower Power (Ren/Nora). Legendaries, representing their value, were impossibly rare and had an infinitely small chance of actually appearing (The most reliable method was to buy the premium chests and hope you'd roll a Legendary, which often cost tons of money), and if you did get one, there was no way to guess which Legendary you'd actually get. Some such as White Rose and Adam were high tier units, others like Hazel or Checkmate were... kinda broken at launch. The playerbase isn't happy at this, especially as free to play players are left out in the cold and reliant on the game giving them high tier units effectively out of pity.
Neon would get a small nerf in the April patch which lessened her taunt range and killed the Disco Bear meta, but her invincibility would be left untouched, even as players submitted feedback regarding how to make it more efficient. The official Amity Arena discord has a weekly feedback section on Tuesdays where players could submit up to four suggestions on how to nerf/buff units and general requests for quality of life such as "Can this character get a new skin from this part of the show," or "Can we have an option to lower music volume that's not just muting all music?" (they never did add that second request) Neon would then remain in this state until the November patch, despite constant weekly requests for a Neon rework, and all it would do is make Neon functionally mortal, in that she had a flat shield bar of 20 that would be lowered by one for each attack before the next hit would kill her. Neon could now die... but your chances of actually doing enough damage to stop her were slim, and regardless, you were now at a serious Aura defecit.
It took seven months for this one unit to get a substantial nerf, all while the game added new units every week and the number of units being affected by patches each month began to gradually sink. To round up some of the major issues people had with Amity that developed throughout 2019 alongside Neon's general existance making life hell:
Unfortunately, the Novemember patch did little to stop the problems with Neon, and a new problem would rear its head for Christmas: Jinn. This unit embodied many of the problems players had: She was a Legendary so it would be hard for free players to get her, and only added to the sheer number of Legendaries that were out there. She was another structure card, and she was horrifically broken. Stopping time for seven seconds in an area around any friendly units, Jinn broke the game overnight, with players horrified at how little playtesting she'd clearly had. Most chip units now couldn't damage structures as Jinn simply could stop time and freeze the turret for the duration of the attack. And to make matters worse? She cost two Aura, meaning it was very easy to cycle a deck and start Jinn spamming.
And yet at two aura she was still one of the only cost-efficient Neon counters... until they patched her to be worth three Aura instead. Talking of the feline menace, January saw Neon get a HP nerf that set her shield at 14. Finally, Neon could be realistically be taken out, still at an Aura defecit but at least it can be countered and now they just have to raise her Aura- why are you buffing her game?
Less than a month later, Neon got, of all things, a buff. Her HP shield was set at 20, and her attacks now did double damage. This is around the point where a lot of players begin to suspect the developers aren't listening to feedback and more long-term players dip out or drop the game. Neon got touched one more time in April, which slowed her down (which itself was a problem as Neon's lessened speed on spawn simply made her better at generating aggro), she dealt 10% less damage and made it somewhat easier to hit her enough to kill her, but a new problem was on the horizon. Because Neon was now no longer the game's White Whale for patches.
Meet the White Fang Gunner Barracks. Added in September 2019, the Barracks fell under many player's radar simply because they were horrifically undertuned. Their gimmick was that every few seconds, a White Fang Gunner would spawn, with three spawning on death. In April, as Neon got her last appearance in the patches, the Barracks got a huge buff and became the centerpiece of the meta; they now spawned two Gunners, which made them immensely valuable for just five Aura. You could overwhelm many anti-swarm units before they had a chance, and shred your way through turrets.
The Barracks would then go six months before this overtuning was rectified, barring one nerf in August that lowered their health to try and stem the tide of units. To sum up every other thing that went wrong during the year meta-wise:
As OctobeNovember comes in, the players are getting more and more furious. The weekly feedback includes a near constant demand for an acknowledgement from the developers given how often it feels like the feedback is being ignored. The social media team get caught several times hyping up how the coming patch would address player concerns, only for said patch to lack those units. The meta has been locked down to the Xiong Family, Flynt, Launcher Nora, Spider-Mines and the hell-cat herself in Neon. Everyone runs at least one of these, people run meta decks not because they want to, but because it's the only way to have a chance of victory.
And then in December, things implode. The patch for the month was set to launch on December 10th with the monthly event missions. But when the clock rolls around, the event missions (which usually take about two weeks to do if you're doing as many as you can a day)... has a six day timer. And the update doesn't come out. The art team doesn't release new unit art. The shop has no special timed bundles. There's no patch notes. And then the Twitter team who've been hard carrying the game through... actually talking to the players and acknowledging the grievances they have... admitted that they don't know what's going on either. The best guess is that the devs have come down with Covid, but no statements to confirm or deny this leave it as guesswork. The timer eventually got reset and people could do the event, but then on Christmas itself, another issue.
Ruby has appeared in the plaza on Halloween (her canonical birthday) and Christmas, and if you go talk to her you get free stuff. But on Christmas people, people discovered that Ruby was talking as if you'd already talked to her. Because they hadn't updated Ruby yet for 2020. She still thought it was 2019 so if you'd talked to her then for goodies, she had none now. They patched it eventually but a lot of people didn't see this fix before the timer ran out to get the free stuff.
Some have resorted to memes to cope with the fact that the game just seems to have died out of the blue. Others have been trying to desperately rally the players and find a way to save it. Some resorted to friendly mockery of the whales who'd spent thousands on a game that seems to be dying (seriously though gacha games need to curb this shit but they won't because whales are godsends for their bank balances).
If the game doesn't get an update in January then two months without new content will mark the end, and the already significant playercount drops will only increase. And it's hard to say if any one thing could have turned Amity Arena's fate around beyond just "Have a better balancing team who can respond better to feedback." Neon began the time of death, but by the time December rolled around the meta was in a horrifically toxic place where if you wanted to make any progession, you had to get down and dirty with the pigs. The team just constantly failed to balance problem units outside of their emergency hotfixes of Jinn, and more often then not they went after units and buffed or nerfed them at random going off playcounts to determine what needed fixing instead of the actual written feedback they were getting. It's clear from the references to the show and some of the attempts to reach out to the community that at least one person in the team genuinely wanted to make the good appealing to RWBY fans, but somewhere during the game's lifespan, they lost their way. Less focus needed to be put on how to milk the players, and instead focusing on making a game sustainable and enjoyable enough to warrant the cosmetics and emotes. The game's failure ultimately isn't on the playerbase. It's on the people who were actually making the game who chose to slack off because they thought it acceptable to do so.
Thanks for reading.
EDIT: HOT OFF THE PRESSES, I JUMPED THE GUN
Had I waited one more day, my story would have had a far more sudden ending, as the game just announced its shutdown for January.
RIP.

Vigilyr's Bygone Basics

Lots of people have been asking similar beginner questions, and the lack of up to date info on the Reddit is an issue, so I thought I'd put together a quick guide on some of the basics in an attempt to help people.
While I will try to stick to facts, some of the following choices and recommendations will be influenced by my own opinion, so take everything with a pinch of salt and keep your own eyes open, because the game is constantly changing and you may find your own alternate route which is better than my own.
This guide aims to provide newer players with the basic framework of the game and some tips to help them make some more informed decisions early on. If you want to get into more detail about the game, or look into more advanced strategies than mentioned in this guide, then I strongly recommend going over to the discord page to talk to the community and get some advice there.
If you are a new player and find this guide useful, then I'd appreciate it if you could use my code when playing the game. Code: JSTGVCY7 Thanks!

THE GUIDE

  1. Skills
  2. Stats
  3. Heroes
  4. Weapons
  5. Spells
  6. Expeditions & Runes
  7. Dungeon & Materials
  8. Gems & Walls & Purchases

SKILLS

Skills are the most important aspect of Days Bygone. Certain skills are preferred before others, but new players shouldn't worry too much about what they unlock, as it shouldn't take too long to get everything. Good early skills include Elixir Mastery and Time Jump to speed up farming, and Deja Vu to keep capped stats maxed between runs, that said almost everything useful to you (besides idle speed & idle damage) so don't get disheartened if you don't get what you want straight away.
Once all skills have been unlocked you will get to the main focus of grinding in the game: awakening skills. Once you progress to a certain level you are able to select 1 of 3 random skills to upgrade. Re-rolling these skills costs gems, so planning ahead and picking wisely is recommended, as although re-rolling is useful, it is also costly. My personal choice of awakening order is:

  1. Elixir Mastery - Doubles Elixir gain
  2. Time Jump - 75% days rewound
  3. Runic Affinity - 4x rune stats
  4. Tinker's Construct - 4x weapon stats
  5. Beautiful Disaster - Crit damage
  6. Inspire - Hero damage
  7. Hard Labour 4x gold increase
  8. Deja Vu - 75% stat retention
  9. Bargaining Chip -75% stats cost
  10. Untapped Power - Damage
  11. Boss Slayer - Damage vs bosses
  12. Mob Slayer - Damage vs minions
(Thanks to the discord guys for their opinions on this)

Keen perception could be taken 3rd, though it would have to be swapped out using gems later once your critical runes and devastate level up. The aim of runic affinity or keen here is to boost your crit % as soon as possible for use with Devastate.
Tinkers construct helps in the early game, especially if using +crit% weapons, but for better late game performance should be swapped out.
This is a General outline as opposed to a strict order to follow. While I feel the first 2 are best gotten as soon as possible, the order of later awakenings, matters a little less.
The build can also be changed to match your own play style and current situation. Do you not have a lot of runes yet? Maybe delay Runic Affinity till a bit later. Want to unlock Devastate to 100% that much faster? Move Hard Labour up on your list of priorities.
People have recently asked about the Weighted Shots skill. Personally I feel that it is a bit of a trap. Taking it will give your weapon damage a huge increase, however even after this increase the damage still falls behind your heroes later on, and the awakened skill could be better spent strengthening your heroes instead. Perhaps an argument could be made to unlock it before your hero damage becomes your main dps, and use it to allow you to progress faster. However the skill is a waste later on, and resetting it will also not refund your spent skill points.
Using gems to re-roll awakened skills can be a painful experience, but it is often necessary to get the optimum build you are aiming for. F2P players will need to plan ahead and see if skipping an option till the next opportunity is viable, as the gem cost is high. I would recommend trying to get Elixir Mastery and Time Jump though, as they provide the best overall farming efficiency increase.
In the latest update many stats now scale up at higher levels, as Hibaricgg posted on the discord:
Awakened Skills Adjustments: Gold/xDamage/Crit Damage/xCrit Damage/Hero Damage/Spell Damage/Projectile Damage: Base x2 Multiplier + Additional x2 at Lv. 10K, 100K, 1M, 10M, 100M, ...
Mob Damage/Boss Damage: Base x3 Multiplier + Additional x3 at Lv. 10K, 100K at 1M, 10M, 100M, ... Flat Damage: Additional x10 at Lv. 10K, 100K, 1M, 10M, 100M, ...
This means that awakening all damage multipliers is more beneficial than it was in the past, and that straight damage increase skills are now viable. Regardless of your build order, keep an eye on your skills, and if you are close to a level border then push to it for greater returns on your elixir.

STATS

When compared to skills, stats play a more minor though still important role. Once Deja Vu has been unlocked the capped stats will no longer reset, meaning that most players will only usually interact with 2-3 stats.
Once you have Deja Vu I recommend filling the capped stats out asap. Then invest Your gold into critical damage. For very new players it may be worth investing into damage early on too, however after a couple of hundred days your weapons and stats will mean that worrying about splitting between damage and critical damage is mostly pointless.
Day 100 now unlocks the Spell Damage stat. Ignore it. Maybe one day spell damage will be viable, but its not today. Spells are useful and will be discussed later, but damage is not their main use.
Come day 1000 you will unlock devastate, this will give your critical strikes a chance to proc further critical damage. When first unlocking it the % chance is so low that the money spent on it will almost seem like a waste. Do not fear, it is a capped stat so will not reset, keep investing everything you have into it until it maxes out at 100% chance. This is currently the most important stat there is, get it asap and watch as your progression skyrockets, particularly if you pair it with crit enhancing skills.
At day 3000 the Gold skill unlocks, this will increase the amount of gold you receive to ludicrous levels. I've not seen anyone try and do the maths for the best returns on gold investment including the new skill yet. Personally I put 50% into gold, and 50% into critical damage. Once I have Deja Vu and Bargaining Chip unlocked I may try and see if splitting the critical damage's gold between damage and critical damage is worthwhile, but currently for me it isn't worth it.

HEROES

Heroes initially take a backseat role in Days Bygone, but after 1000 waves or so they are going to be your main damage dealers, so picking the right ones for your team is important. Heroes can be generally spit into 2 categories, support or damage dealer, with a couple doing a bit of both. Heroes are split into 4 levels: common, rare, epic, and legendary. In general legendary heroes are better than lower heroes, but this is not always the case, and there are even common heroes who may find a place on endgame lineups. Damage heroes must have some form of critical or % damage to be viable once devastate unlocks, so if they don't have it then I will not be giving them a review.
When discussing heroes I will often talk about 'investing' in them, this means spending upgrade materials earned in the dungeon to enhance their abilities. It is quite time consuming to collect all the materials you need, so make sure you invest wisely. You can pay gems to return all the materials you invested in a hero, but at 500 gems a time for a fully upgraded hero it is very expensive. I will usually talk about heroes' abilities as if they are fully upgraded.
If you don't have some of the heroes you want, don't worry about it. Tickets are easily farmable later on, so don't waste your gems buying them early.

Gwen - support: Gwen's ability to perma-freeze a target is amazing, and she is the only hero capable of doing so. She needs material investment to do this, but the result is worth it. Very effective vs normal waves and makes certain bosses trivial. A must pick if you are having problems with the witch, dragon, minotaur and zombie bosses. one of the few common heroes that might be used end game. She obviously doesn't contribute vs frost immune enemies however, and her damage is non existent.
Paul - DPS with minor support: Pauls critical damage is huge and his knockback effect at higher levels can really help take the heat off when combined with other crowd control. Probably not endgame worthy due to limited number of enemies hit, but as a stop gap choice you could do worse. Does well vs bosses.
Tristan - support: Effectively a map-wide 60% slow when fully upgraded, has obvious synergy with Clarissa. If enemies rushing you is a problem then this is your guy (though obviously not for slow immune ones). Downside is that he really needs to be fully upgraded before becoming really useful. Bouncy is especially needed for him to be viable.
Job - % hp dps: Job actually found a use in old lineups who used him for his % hp burn effect. With the meta changing in newer updates however the kind of builds that need job are now gone, with no critical he is not worth it.
Hank - Very early dps/ support: No critical effect again, making him useless later on. His multi shot skill will let him knock back many targets....but do you really have an issue with normal mobs? Pass.

Chandler and Cusack - support: It easier to talk about these guys together. Simply put I don't think it is worthwhile spending 2 hero slots to provide an ok freeze effect. Cusack is ok, but Gwen is better. Chandler helps Cusack give his axes piercing and +1 second freeze time when upgraded, but is otherwise a waste of space. You could use them if you have nothing better, but I wouldn't recommend investing in them.
Arthur - dps: A little of bit of a crit effect makes him better than those dps without it, but with no support skills and a dps that falls behind other choices there is little reason to use him.
Greg - dps: When ramped up his fire rate is around 2 per second, and he has bouncy and 10% critical damage. Is this enough to make him an end game pick? Personally I've not had the materials to try him out yet, maybe....but probably not. He faces tough competition in the forms of Eleanor and Zare. Could see some usage in dungeons and expeditions, where his ramp up will almost always be active, however zare still probably does his job better, and enemies which block projectiles in expeditions will severely limit his damage.
Cherry - dps?: No. Utterly useless.

Eleanor - Awesome dps: Eleanor is good. Her damage is is moderate but she shoots more than 3 times a second, 7 arrows a time, which each deal 20% of your critical damage. Her greatest downside is that she requires a high crit chance, so awakened Keen perception and a level 9+ critical rune are necessary to make her critical proc 100% of the time.
Esther - Anti-boss dps: Esther is another potential end game epic hero. Her flat 35% current hp damage is great when dealing with the toughest bosses, and her attack speed at around 5.5 seconds means that she will be taking chunks of HP off pretty often. Not very useful vs normal waves.
Elaine - Support: Meh. I have tried a fully maxed out Elaine and all I can say is that I was underwhelmed. If you want Proper support then look to Tristan or Gwen instead. Her knock back doesn't work on siege mobs, and its slow cool down makes it of limited use v most bosses. Pass. Edit: It seems that some players do like her for support in certain builds, as nothing besides siege units are immune to gale she offers a more generalist option than Gwen. Personally I prefer Gwen to hard counter some bosses, but an argument can be made for Elaine instead.
Maximus - Support: The latest update has enabled maximus' portals to proc their slow/freeze on slow/freeze immune units. That sounds pretty good, however his area of a attack is random, and so is the chance of causing a debuff. I haven't tried him myself since the patch, at the moment I am interested in his potential but not optimistic. Requires all skills unlocked to really be useful.
Zare -dps: Once upgraded he has the ability to cause great damage to groups of enemies. 10% crit damage might sound small, but it procs on every enemy it passes through. Could be useful if you are having issues with large mobs, though not good vs bosses. Possibly endgame worthy.

Dark Merlin -dps & support when upgraded: Dark Merlin averages 15% max hp damage every 15 seconds, making him potentially hard hitting vs bosses, but also the slowest attacking hero in the game. He may cause slow or freeze effects, but with such a slow attack speed it will not happen very often. He has some uses, though he is not as vital as he used to be in the %HP damage meta. A possible endgame pick.
Dash - Anti siege & boss dps: Yes. Pick him. In the game's current state siege mobs make up the largest proportion of waves each day. Dash has the highest dps of any hero when facing them. The damage is also instant and with no cool down. Almost a certain pick. Greatest downsides are that he does not hit all enemies at once, he has no use vs normal mobs, and his ai targeting needs some work vs the zombie boss.
Dewitt - Back with a buff this patch, Dewitt is now able to freeze immune enemies, this includes mana eating siege mobs and caveman bosses. At 11 seconds his attack is slow, but his freeze duration is 5 seconds long which helps to balance it out. Combine him the the Blizzard spell and you can get through most things easily enough. His upgrades only give damage, so if you already have that covered then he is a cheap investment to a team.
Elden - Close range dps: Elden finds himself as a viable pick again for an endgame team despite being much weaker now that his massive bouncing % hp attack has gone. Instead we have a hero who can dump massive damage at close range as well as having a nice little current% hp damage against high hp foes. Overall good dps with great results vs fast enemies that rush you. Needs all critical skill tree upgrades to be effective.
Lilibeth & Lilith - pure dps: If you need some dps then these girls are an efficient and simple answer to it. Lilith is better than Lilibeth, so if you only need one then take her. Solid dps choices.
Merlin - Anti mob: With the nerf to the %HP meta merlin has fallen out of favour. He does ok vs mobs, but mobs are rarely the biggest problem you will face. He can work early on if you have no other choices, but I wouldn't keep him in his current state. Needs all upgrades and Alden discovered to be effective, not worth it.
Clarissa - The newest addition to the game. When upgraded she is capable of hitting for the highest non-%hp damage in the game, but with the restriction of needing a slow to be inflicted and with an 11 second cool down time. Somethings to note here are that frozen enemies also count as being slowed, and that slow immune enemies are still able to be damaged by her as of the latest patch. Due to the requirement of needing a slow she will almost always be used with Tristan. I'm not convinced that her damage is worth it for 2 hero slots, but if you already using Tristan then she is a decent pick. Otherwise Lilith offers similar damage without any limitations.

To conclude, try to mix and match a team that will give a the best dps with a sprinkling of support that helps vs your most challenging enemies. Remember that legendary does not always mean better, I personally just swapped out Gwen for Dewitt, and whilst this has helped me vs cavemen and mana-eaters, it has also made dragons, minotaurs and witches a lot more difficult. I'm still not convinced this was a good choice, maybe if I get more Yarn I will add her back in. As you can see, there is not best team, but certainly there are strong choices which handle different situations in better or worse ways.

WEAPONS

Weapons are a random element in Days bygone, due to their method of acquisition, that effect the overall efficiency of your team. In the early game the damage stat is important to your own personal damage output, whereas later on your heroes will benefit more from it.
Unlike Heroes, the only weapons you will want to use are legendary ones. The reason for this is that only legendary weapons have 4 rune slots. There are often posts on Reddit or Discord asking about whether X or Y weapon is good. Strictly speaking only legendaries are good, and you would be best to get one asap.
Weapons are obtained from weapons crates, the creates are obtained by beating new bosses (2 per boss if you watch the ads), or by buying them using fossils and keys.
When should you use your crates to get a new weapon? I believe every 100 levels is usually a good time to try and roll for a new legendary. Every 100 levels should get you 40 weapon crates which give you a decent chance, and even if you don't get the weapon you want, you still get gems that can be used for other things. Remember Caladbolg is there if everything else fails.
If you have not been lucky to not find one in a crate, don't worry, you can use 200 fossils from expedition to get Caladbolg. Even early on if you leave your phone overnight you will have a legendary weapon the next day. While perhaps not the most efficient use of runes you can do this to ensure that every day you have a legendary weapon at your current max day. Do note that Caladbolg can only be sold for 1 ruby, so farming it for rubies is generally not very profitable.
Caladbolg - your go to freebie legendary weapon is actually not bad. Ok its not good either as its low damage lets it down vs other legendaries, and its weapon effect is only useful vs lower day enemies it can actually kill. However the +crit% works great with eleanor and Devastate, so there are definitely worse options out there.
Aldan - Second highest damage instant attack with an AoE effect. Has a small knock back effect. A good weapon that helps slightly speed up farming due to instantly hitting enemies. One of the top picks.
Bazooka - Critical damage is a good stat to have and the strong AoE knockback is nice too once your weapon damage no longer hurts enemies. Also a top choice.
Durendal - Meh. It's a legendary weapon so its ok, but there are better weapons available.
Minigun - The best dps available to your main character. Unfortunately the ramp up and agility effects do not work on your heroes, making it a good pick early on, but a weaker one later.
Mjolnir - Large AoE weapon with crit% boosting effect. Basically acts as a better Caladbog with better damage, which makes it one of the best choices while you are still leveling up your devastate. Biggest weakness is that it has no knock back effect.
Excalibur - Ok damage with an increased agility skill. The agility skill doesn't effect heroes which is a waste, however with knock back, piercing and a large volume of shots the weapon ensures that mobs are never a problem again.
Galatine - Highest attack power on a weapon, with a great ability. It's front loaded damage ability allows it to quickly remove problematic siege waves and the damage boost lets your hero attacks stay relevant into the late game even without taking Weighted Shots. By far the best late game weapon.
Overall, Galatine is currently the best choice for late game play, with Alden/MjolniBazooka being good choices as you progress.

SPELLS

This should be a short section, as spells are not so numerous or useful in the current edition of the game.
Tier 1
The only possibly useful spells are ice shard to stop bosses, and maybe zap if you want to push a little more damage on bosses, though its generally better to use thunderbolt instead.
Tier 2
Thunderbolt is the only useful one here. Use it on those tough bosses to take them down faster.
Tier 3
Tornado can be useful for grouping up enemies to thunderbolt/Esther them, as well as collecting them into a ball for Gwen to perma-freeze. Blizzard is useful by itself for obvious reasons, but pairs very well with Dewitt, enabling you to freeze enemies for nearly 15 seconds. Revelation is a good skill to slow waves if you are not using Tristan. Thunderstorm does great damage to large bosses who are away from the edge of the screen, and Armageddon does decent damage to finish off waves/boss. Avoid using Tornado/Thunderstorm/Armageddon when enemies are pushed to the back, as the spells will have little effect or miss.
With recent changes to the game spell damage has received new ways to increase its damage, but without a way to activate devastate its damage falls way behind conventional means. Use your spells for support and crowd control, except for Armageddon and Thunderstorm which don't rely on your spell damage stat anyway.

Expeditions & Runes

Expeditions are a ways for you to farm the fossil currency. This is used predominantly to buy runes, items which go into slots on your weapon to increase your efficiency, as well as a few other items and the legendary weapons Caladbolg.
Expeditions are split into 4 difficulties Easy, Normal, Hard and Hell. In general each is more profitable than the last, with hell being best place to farm fossils. Of course this is only true if you can last long enough to farm some fossils, so only move to the next difficulty if you can survive at least 2-3 minutes or so.
With AFK assist expeditions automatically restart, so you can leave them running overnight to maximize your farming.
When talking about runes, I will only be referring to greater runes, as they are the only ones worth buying. Ignore the others.
Runes come in 8 varieties. Damage, critical damage, critical chance, hero damage, health, mana, spell damage and blank.
The generally accepted best combination is Damage, critical damage, and hero damage, + Critical chance.
Critical chance should be upgraded asap to let your devastate begin to carry you, though if you drew Keen Perception and don't feel like re-rolling it then it is less of a priority.
You can double up runes, it wont have as great effect as when you put the original rune on, but using another rune of the same level should double your overall damage. If doubling runes then critical damage is the preferred choice.
Health and mana runes are obvious in their uses, and spell damage is best avoided.
Runes can be upgraded by combining 2 runes of the same level, and paying a price of rune dust.
It is best to only combine 2 runes of the same kind, as mixing runes gives random results, whereas 2 runes of the same kind do not.
Rune dust can be collected by breaking down runes you don't need. Blank runes have no purpose besides being used for this, and give 21 dust per rune. Other runes give 7 dust each.
The max level of runes is 15. This will take a very long time to farm. Fortunately the latest patch has made things a little easier by increasing the drop rate of fossils. That said, if you are a new player don't expect to have max runes any time soon.
There are some insane times on the expedition scoreboards of around 45 minutes, don't worry about these, those times were made in long previous patches which had abusable mechanics. In the current version of the game runs of around 10-15 mins are quite usual. The new damage mechanics however will probably push these times up soon.

Dungeons and Materials

The dungeon is the place where you can farm Keys. Keys are predominately used to buy hero resources that are used to level up heroes and upgrade their skills trees.
The general rule you will want to follow, is that you should be farming the hardest day you can which poses no danger to you, this can often be many hundreds of days below your max day, don't worry. The higher day you farm the greater your rewards, but you don't want the enemies wasting time by defeating you.
Like the expedition this can be left on overnight to keep you farming.
Heroes eat up a lot of resources, and resources are one of the major bottlenecks in leveling up your heroes, so time spent doing this is always worthwhile.

Gems & Walls & Purchases

Gems are the premium currency of the game, and are often in short supply.
Make sure you watch your 3 ads a day to get those 15 free gems, and do your daily quests for another 30.
The only other ways to get gems are to get achievements, sell weapons, and use your wallet.
The best uses for Gems are as follows:
If you are not doing these things with gems, but are also not using your wallet, then it is probably a waste.
Re-rolling skills may possibly take 1000's of gems depending on your luck, so its always good to save them up.
Regarding purchases, if you want to spend money on the game then I would definitely recommend all 3 of the basic packs, these are the skip ads pack, the auto play pack (unless you are some guy with an ingenious plan, too much time, and a sausage), and the 2x rewind speed pack. All of these are quality of life purchases that will make your time with the game more efficient and enjoyable (nobody likes watching ads after all).
The Hero chest and Titan Chest are more on the expensive side, but both of them will help to rapidly increase your progress by saving you a lot of dungeon farming time and letting you get a full team of heroes asap.

THE END

This brings me to the end of my guide. I hope this has helped newer players reading it, and guided them to make some wiser choices that I myself did not take.
A reminder again for new players who appreciated this, my in game code is: JSTGVCY7
If you spot anything obviously wrong with the guide let me know.
Thank you for reading, thank you for anyone who uses my code, and thank you to the developer for their continued support of the game.

Questions Answers
While there is no doubt that your expose' will only improve security in the long haul, what are you thoughts/feelings on the immediate impact of your findings? At the end of the day, I know that people will use this for malicious purposes, just like any important vulnerability that's disclosed. However, I have to balance that out with a question that's been on my mind for a long time: How many people used this before I even thought of it? How many people have been robbed or worse, because of these buggy locks?
Did you do any sort of responsible disclosure such as contacting Onity before going public? Covered at Link to www.reddit.com
I'm in the navy, and currently living in the barracks which are secured by these locks. This explains how a friend of mine had some of his stuff taken. Thanks for doing your part to stop this, we kind like our stuff here. Wait, they're using HT locks or CT locks? They look slightly different, and this stuff won't work on CT. HT is usually only used in hotels, whereas CT is used for commercial buildings, dorm rooms, barracks, etc. I know CT locks are used on some carriers, for instance.
What are you working on over at Mozilla? I work on Boot2Gecko, primarily doing gfx optimizations. Currently working on overscroll animations (what happens when you scroll a page too far).
Do you use Boot2Gecko as your primary phone or for any "serious"/actual normal stuff you'd use with your previous Android or iOS phone? Not yet. I use it as a side phone when I need it, but honestly I break it too often to do so. Sometime soon I'll set a phone aside for stable testing and dogfood it properly.
Why is it important to have an animation for it? Why not just have it have a hard stop? It feels very unnatural to have a hard stop.
Why doesn't Firefox/Gecko recognize my website's beautiful CSS3 stylized scrollbars? Sad. Couldn't tell you, sorry. I work much, much lower level than that; know nothing about the layout side of things.
None of our guests knew anything about it, so no having to deal with the fallout. Let me ask you, though, since I have your attention, what your beer of choice is? Depends on my mood. Overall favorite is Clown Shoes Black IPA, but I'm also a huge fan of Anchor Steam.
Clown Shoes? Damn, just looked them up and they don't seem to be available to California. Anchor Steam is a damn fine beer, though. Have you had their Breckel's Brown? So tasty and malty, like a biscuit. Don't believe I have. I'll check it out :)
Dude you're a MA guy? Western MA reporting in, Clown Shoes is AWESOME. Link to beeradvocate.com. Nope, sorry. NYC for a few more hours, then CT. Fell in love with Clown Shoes after they came to a local craft beer festival.
Also, something I was wondering earlier. Why didn't you give them a full heads up before releasing it full disclosure? Isn't it ethical to give them a warning you are going to release a pretty big vulnerability in a companies product? Tl;dr: I figured that getting the information out there and exposing this as the major issue it is was priority number 1; the safety issues involved make it a really risky proposition, and letting people know how bad things are was the best way.
I saw a couple options if I had gone to Onity with these issues ahead of time: 1) They file a lawsuit and keep me tied up in court to keep the info out of the public eye and save face. Result: information doesn't go public (and get fixed) for years. 2) They ignore it, I release everything. Result: same thing we have now. 3) They claim to fix it repeatedly and pressure me to hold off on releasing anything until X% of hotels are fixed. Result: nothing happens, ever; they fix it in an improper way and hotels never update. I eventually release, maybe. 4) They fix it quickly, get the fix out to hotels on their dime, and all is well. Result: Complete safety.
In my opinion, #1 and #3 are most likely. Either way, hotels continue to be unsafe for a very long time. That isn't okay in my book. This forced their hand such that they had to respond and fix the issues, and they're taking steps to do that now.
All of this is combined with the fact that I know I'm not the first person to discover this. It's simply too damn simple; how many people have used this in the past for malicious reasons? The cat has been out of the bag for many years, IMO.
Lets say you have 30 days until the presentation, you get an anonymous email address and send the company a description of the flaws with a note saying you will release the info to the public in 30 days and will not be checking your email until after that time. Maybe screenshot/record the mail being sent for evidence in case they deny it. In this scenario they have 30 days to fix the problem, they have no way to threaten you (or maybe they they could threaten the conference and this idea only works if you leak the info online independently?), and you can expose them as being even bigger pricks if they fail to take timely action to fix the problem. A decent idea, or not workable? That sort of thing would probably work if you wanted to remain anonymous while giving them a heads up. However, it seems like it'd increase your liability if you were to get into a legal battle after it.
Wikipedia tells me you were interested in computing by the age of four. What was it that got you interested at such a young age? I discovered a book on BASIC for the Apple ][E in my school library, and started tweaking the code in there, then started writing little text-based games; that was probably kindergarten or first grade. It was short (maybe 30-40 pages?) and IIRC its cover was orange with white lettering, if anyone has a clue. Would love to get a copy again.
The other thing was that I learned about EDIT.COM and opened the game Pilgrim's Quest in it, on my old 386. I was maybe 6 or 7, and I had absolutely no idea what I was doing, but I mashed keys and typed in words and such; it wasn't source, it was a raw binary. I ran the game, and the screen was completely corrupted, but on pressing a key, you'd hear a sound. Each key had a different sound. It was then that I realized that if you understood what these things did, you could be the master of a little universe of your own.
Of course, playing Shadowrun on the Genesis when I was a little bit older helped a lot. I still want to be a decker; hell, I even named my old OS "Renraku".
How does a 30 year old newbie learn to code? I'm not really sure. The hard part is just getting started, so maybe something like Link to www.codecademy.com could be of help.
I think the book you used was called "BASIC Programming for Kids." If so, that's the exact same book that got me into programming too! Link to www.amazon.com. Holy shit, I think you're right. Thank you!
Now that you've mentioned Apple, what is your opinion of Apple? I hear a lot of opinions here on Reddit regarding Apple, but I would love to hear what someone like yourself thinks of Apple or their direction/machines. I like some of their products (I couldn't live without my iPad, particularly) but despise their business practices.
I want to be a white hat security guy; how do I get started? my background is unix sysadmin/qa, etc. Learn to program in at least one high-level language (Python, Ruby, JS, whatever), learn to program in at least one low-level language (C is best, C++ is almost as good). If you want to work on the reverse-engineering side of things, learning assembly for at least one ISA (x86 is best) is a very good thing. If you want to work on the web side of things (which you'll likely need, at some point or another) then you have to understand how web development is done, how the web itself works, how JS works, etc.
Start from the top down; first step is the web. OWASP has lots of good information, but use it to just get a feeling for what's out there, then Google around.
Run through some web security challenges, e.g. HackThisSite, and use WebGoat as a test.
Read up on native security a bit -- learn the basics of buffer overflows and all that fun stuff.
Grab old versions of open source software with known vulnerabilities, and rediscover them. This applies equally well to native and web software.
Practice, practice, practice. Every time you encounter a piece of technology or a security process, think about how you could attack it. Take a shot at every piece of software you come across (-NOT- web-based services; that's generally illegal).
Surround yourself with people smarter than you are on every topic you're interested in. This is easy to do in the age of the interwebs.
I'm also writing a book on getting into security; the outline is available at Link to gist.github.com . The point of it is not to be a complete guide to every detail of every part of security, but rather to expose you to enough different things that when you need to learn something, you're able to. It'll be out... sometime before I die :P.
Are these generally the same set of instructions necessary for someone of less than honorable morals to learn to get into the criminal side of things? I ask out of curiosity if the difference is entirely intentions, because i'm really interested in psychology. Totally not a criminal and stuff :P. The only difference between an honorable hacker and a dishonorable hacker is what they do with their knowledge, not the knowledge itself.
Do you have an idea when this book will be released? I'm quite interested :) Can you suggest any other book(s) on the subject? I really have no idea. I'm about a quarter of the way finished, having started it maybe 4-5 months ago, so it's coming along pretty quickly. I'm happy with how it's turning out, though I have no idea how I'm going to publish it; some friends keep telling me to throw up a Kickstarter project to fund it, pay for an editor, etc but I'm on the fence still.
Ask you ANYTHING? well why don't we start with how do you do it? As in how it works? Well, there's a port on the bottom of the lock that's used to program the lock. That port allows direct memory access, enabling you to read the sitecode (unique code for the property) out of memory, then send it back up with the open command. No authentication is required, and it takes about 200ms for it to pop open. Full details are available at Link to daeken.com if you want more details.
Or do you mean how I actually got to that point?
Well I was actually jokingly asking you to disclose the secrets of your trade. Answer was totally unexpected and satisfactory :) First step is to figure out what your goal is. For instance, you may want to understand the model format in a game, so you can render them yourself.
Once you have your goal, think about how you would design the system you're trying to reverse-engineer. It doesn't have to be detailed, just a general idea.
From that, come up with a set of assumptions about the system. E.g. "there will be a field in the header that is roughly the size of the file divided by 12 (3 x 4 byte floating point values, for coordinates)". Then check each of those.
Once you've done that, rethink your model of how it works using the new information, and repeat until you figure it out.
It helps massively to know a little about everything, so you can draw conclusions about how things work just by seeing what it does. Yep. That example is real, btw -- I worked on reversing the Everquest file formats many, many years ago to write my own client for it. I was still in high school at the time; I printed out a couple pages of the hex dump of a few files in a given format, then I'd go over them with highlighters and figure out the specific bits. It's all about pattern matching and checking assumptions.
Even though I didnt understand a huge amount of acronyms in that it was still really interesting! thanks! Anything specifically? I might be able to clear things up.
Do you think the lock manufacturer will fix the vulns at least for newly produced locks? Or are there maybe even inherent protocol weaknesses that would make a patched lock incompatible with existing programming devices or cards or so? Fixing these vulnerabilities consists of two parts: changing the protocol for the portable programmer such that direct memory access is not possible, and changing the crypto to use a safe algorithm and a large key size (a 32-bit key on a terrible proprietary algorithm is very much Not Ok (TM)).
This means that the portable programmer and encoder both have to be changed, in addition to the locks. I can only hope they'll do all of this, and get it audited to know that it actually works properly.
So they need to replace 4 million locks and other stuff too. Wouldn't they be worried that a new RE will then come by and expose new vulnerabilities? They should be concerned about that no matter what. That's why I strongly, strongly recommend them to have everything thoroughly audited by independent security professionals. Will they catch everything? No. Will they catch these sorts of horribly obvious vulnerabilities? Absolutely.
Thought the mfr issued a statement that they were fixing "most" of the locks with a physical deterrent and "firmware upgrade"? Am I missing something? Am I in the wrong thread again?? Fuck! What they've described as their plan to fix these issues is, I believe, not actually going to solve everything. Details are at Link to daeken.com
Does Onity actually think that people don't have access to Torx bits? I'm sure they realize that people have them, but that it'll add quite a few seconds to the opening process, rather than it being instant. It also makes it harder to not be obvious that you're doing it or that you were there.
Honestly, it's not a bad solution, it just should be paired with fixing the underlying vulnerabilities.
Caleb from Hackaday.com here. Think they'll just ignore it like bump keys? Seems like so much money and trouble to go back and fix everything. I think that it's public enough that they'll be forced to do the right thing eventually and release a fix/recall in the future. I just don't know when that'll be.
How did you become so smart? College? Self-learning? If so, what did you read or follow? Everything I know was self-taught. I just found interesting things and started doing them. I'm actually a high school dropout, no college at all haha.
Why wasn't your presentation part of the normal blackhat briefings (the last two days)? Did one need more than a standard 'briefings only' badge to see your talk? I was frustrated to be excluded, having paid so much money for entry. They decided they wanted a "fun" presentation for the Zero Day Briefings that happened the night before everything, and I was picked for it. You didn't need any special badge, but it was woefully under-advertised. Amazed I got as many people as I did, honestly. That said, the presentation sucked -- my timing was totally off, so I ran through my 60 minute slot in... 30.
How many people actually came to your presentation? I assume only those from the trainings sessions ($5,000+ entry) were able to see your talk? For what it's worth, I'm planning on doing another one of it which will be livestreamed with a public Q&A. Not sure when, but I'll announce it on Twitter (@daeken) and my blog (Link to daeken.com) ahead of time.
Thoughts on Ada vs. C? Never wrote much Ada at all, so I don't have much of an opinion on it. C is my mother tongue (along with x86 asm) effectively, so I'm naturally biased towards it.
How much did you enjoy Stuxnet? Never looked into Stuxnet at all; malware doesn't interest me in the least.
Is reversing as boring as I imagine it? Reversing for me is amazingly interesting. Don't get me wrong, it definitely gets old sometimes. But it's a combination of the ultimate application of the scientific method (ok, this is how it would work if I designed it... what assumptions can I make from there, and how can I check them? Rinse, repeat) and putting together mental jigsaw puzzles while only having hints of what the image should be. I love it.
How does it feel to work in a field society absolutely doesn't give a shit about? Are there actually organizations out there that care about IT security in a way that deserves the word? Law firms? Drug cartels? The Vatican? I'm in it for the challenge, above all else. While most people have no idea what I do and those that do frequently dislike it, it's immensely challenging and fun for me. The money helps too, of course.
Can you tell me any secret IRC rooms where reversers hang out to be away from the noobs? PM me if necessary. I don't really know of any. I hang out in a lot of IRC channels, though, where this sort of thing is discussed in passing frequently, but they're mostly social. PM me on Freenode (nick is Daeken) if you want to join any of them. Also, #lockresearch (Freenode) is a channel I started to continue the Onity work, if you're interested.
Do you know of any secure hard-drives where the ATA security feature cannot be circumvented by firmware update or overwriting certain disk sectors? If not, are there other ways to reach this goal like cutting write-enable pins to flash chips? Never looked into ATA security stuff, sorry.
What do you think about the "oh, we'll send out some screws to stick into the reprogramming hole" response from the vendor? Would you stay in a hotel room with that patch applied? I think it's actually a really nice temporary fix, and I think it's good to have it there even once these issues are fixed -- after all, there are likely others there. It's not perfect, but it raises the bar slightly, and that's a good thing. The rest of the response... not so much.
Honestly, the likelihood of anything happening to you (even if you left the door latch off and had a vulnerable lock) is tiny. I always throw the door latch/chain on when it's available, but I don't stress about it. If someone wants to rob me or whatnot, they'll do it.
Did you get any blow backs from this? Like did any hotels or security companies (the lock companies) get pissed at you? I'm sure a lot of people are pissed at me, but outside of some rude comments on the internet (gasp) I haven't heard a thing.
Favorite sandwich? Reuben with thousand island dressing. Pretty much all I ate for a week after moving to NYC.
Damn, I replied before that we had very similar introductions into computers and now this. Are you the black hat version of me, though we both love Reubens, our universal weakness? Lots of sauerkraut, no lean meat, go hard or go home? Wouldn't the blackhhat version of you eat pastrami sandwiches instead? Then again, I do love pastrami...
You're in NYC now? I just moved away after several amazing years. Enjoy! Try the burgers at Paul's on 8th. Good work on getting a repeatable hack on these locks published. Now I can finally use the pool at the Hilton! I've been in NYC for a little under two years, but I'm actually moving to CT tomorrow haha.
Living in NYC, moving to CT, computer knowledge... Are you Foamy? Nope, sorry.
How does one get started in reverse engineering? Learn C.
Learn x86 assembly (start by compiling C you write down to assembly and reading it, then get your friends to write some stuff and compile it for you, then decompile it back to C by hand)
Start digging into every protocol and file format you can find. Pick a goal (e.g. I want to write a model viewer for WoW) and jump into it.
Practice, practice, practice.
If you want to go down that path, shoot me a PM on Freenode IRC; nick's Daeken.
I see from other comments as well that you are an advocate of C. What are your thoughts on C vs C++? C++ has its place, much as I hate to say it. I've recently begun relearning C++ properly, along with Boost, so that I can make use of Cinder. I don't completely hate it.
One of the reports mentions your code/device failing to open some locks in a few cases. Was that just a matter of your stuff being mostly proof of concept code that needed refinement, or were the locks any different from what you had been working on previously? I know that the locks were different (in that they used slightly different boards), but the key problem was a timing issue with my Arduino sketch. The night before the Forbes demo, I hacked the sketch up to add some extra functionality (reading out the code key values needed to make master cards, in addition to just opening the door) and I'm fairly confident that screwed up the timing, which I calibrated carefully a long while back.
Outside of some random documentation issues and a little bug in the code, I'm fairly certain that the code that I released in my paper (largely the original code) works 100% of the time. That's definitely been what I've heard from people who have tested it. Not sure how I feel about that.
How I'd solve this: Port it to a much faster uC, run your communications code in a fast high priority interrupt handler, will be rock solid. I think a PIC32MX7 would probably do it. Yep, a number of people have built independent implementations on random uCs and had full success.
Have you ever used your skills for something mischievous? or for a personal gain? Mischievous, not really. For personal gain, nothing directly outside of just using my skills for work; my projects like these have ended up boosting my reputation and making it easier to get work, so that counts I guess.
Did you see the industry having to do a complete overhaul of their procedures? Or was that the point? That was the point, by and large. The Onity vulnerabilities are terrible and obvious, and obviously need to be fixed, but I think the bigger picture is: there are plenty of other lock vendors, and I'm sure they aren't that much better. Security -- real, hard security -- needs to be the norm here, and that won't happen without getting some knocks.
Did you ever fear repercussions by Onity? I mean you're hurting their business and public image quite a bit. Fear? Not so much; I feel I've done the right thing and stayed within the bounds of the law. I'm surprised there hasn't been an attempt to 'shut me up', though.
Are you working on your next big hack? If so, can you give us a taste? You know, at this point I have no idea. I'm amassing hardware hacking equipment at the moment (well, putting in orders; moving tomorrow, so I had to wait), so something will be coming eventually. Mainly focusing on work, demoscene stuff, and some independent consulting at the moment.
It's very likely this won't be the last of the lock stuff I do. I've got some things on my mind, but I have no idea what will come of any of it.
Do you have more information on reversing the Emotive brain-computer interface that can be publicly released? I wrote about my reversing process at Link to daeken.com It's currently maintained as part of Link to www.openyou.org
If you have any questions about it beyond this stuff, feel free to ask. That was a fun project.
Cheers, Cody. (Awesome name for a hacker, btw) Definitely something I'd like to get involved in when my programming skills are less shit. The brain hacking thing's sure to be a big thing in the future - especially now there's a cheap consumer virtual reality headset on the way. Well, if you're interested go ahead and jump on ##reversing on irc.freenode.net -- just started it to help people get up to speed.
Is there anything else that you like to do with your spare times besides reverse engineering things? In terms of tech, I spend a lot of time working on demoscene productions and writing random little apps/tools. Otherwise, just doing things with the girlfriend; seeing movies, going to plays, bowling, shopping, etc. I'm pretty boring, generally.
Occasional acid flashback? We don't talk about that these days. Not after the incident.
I heard that when they tested your hotel door unlock scheme on several randomly chosen hotel locks, it only worked on a small percentage. Covered that at Link to www.reddit.com
So, I see a lot of questions about security and whatnot, but I have something totally different to ask you. What do you do for fun? Things both in and out of the realm of CS. First part is covered at Link to www.reddit.com
Do you ever do random challenges for the heck of it (like writing a Befunge interpreter in Befunge, for example)? Or do you strictly do stuff like that for work? I do a lot of random challenges in programming/reversing/security. Bug bounties (see Link to www.ccbill.com ) are a lot of fun, and I used to do a lot of esoteric language work ( Link to esolangs.org ). Also, a lot of Project Euler; it's slow going, though, since I don't allow myself to Google anything, ask questions, etc.
That's pretty awesome. I don't think I'm good enough at programming for any serious bug bounties, but I totally respect people who are. I used to do a ton of work in esoteric languages (mostly Befunge '98 and Piet) but the esolang community seems to be all but dead lately. Hey, nobody starts out awesome. It takes a lot of work to get to the point where you can totally dominate bounty programs; start small and work up. Simple sites like CCBill (whose bug bounty program is unfortunately terminated. May or may not have been my fault...) are a great place to start.
Can you break the lock on my Chasity belt I lost the key?!? Given the 'Lord' in your name, I believe I will pass ;)
How many hotel owners do you think even care or will bother to change this? For the majority of the people staying, no one would even realize that this is a flaw in the particular hotel they're staying at. So how/why would owners actually go ahead and do this fix, especially since its going to be out of their own pockets? How do you convince them to change it? Lots will care, simply because of the black eye the industry as a whole is getting in the press right now. However, I think many won't do anything about it, simply because they do have to pay for it themselves. That's why I believe that the responsible response from Onity would be a proper recall, at their expense. It's the only way that hotels are going to fix this.
Is it true that you find this easy but riding a bike very difficult? Quite so.
What ever happened to that chair you hate? Hah. I have no idea. Do you still have the sound bite of "Fuck! I hate this chair" ?
Purely hypothetical of course, but would it have been possible to make a little more money...doing this the other way? Are those routes possible? Are there people who are interested? Where there's money involved, there's always a moral and immoral path; someone will always be willing to throw you some money.
Have you figure out, how to unlock the heart of a woman? I believe so, yes.
I may be very naïve with this question and stuff but I really want to get into hacking/security. However, I really want to learn a programming language too. With what programming language would you suggest that I start with? I was thinkig between Python and C. Thanks in advance! I absolutely recommend both Python and C. They're the two languages I use most commonly. From there, go for x86 assembly.
Oh man so much thanks for answering! I honestly didn't expect you to answer my little question in this thread of a 1000+ replies, thanks a lot man! I'm making an attempt to answer every reasonable question haha.
You said a while back here that you were working on a book about software emulation. Is this still in the works? It is. Sort of. I wrote half the book, scrapped it, wrote half the book, scrapped it again. I can't come up with anything that 1) teaches the things I want to teach, 2) isn't a million pages, and 3) actually makes sense to anyone but myself. If it's ever going to work, it's going to be in the form of a bunch of separate ebooks on specific issues, I think.
Why didn't you tell the lock manufacturer and hotel chains instead of blasting it to the entire world so everyone can break into any hotel room? Covered this all over the thread, but here: Link to www.reddit.com
Like a bikechain that can be broken through with lockcutters? I don't think security through obscurity works anywhere, but just like on the interwebs, anything that raises the barrier to entry makes things safer, even if not more secure.
Can you comment on my thoughts above? As for how long it takes to open a lock with the vulnerabilities described in the paper, you're several orders of magnitude off; you plug a device into the lock (which can be done in under a second), it opens in 200 milliseconds or less, and you're in.

Questions Answers
Whats the most of amount of cash you've seen at one time? Ever tempted? Whenever I go into the main vault, there is anywhere from 5-20 million dollars in there.
Never tempted really.
35 minutes and 1 answer... Sorry broski.
What's the worst thing you've seen in a casino? A woman that thought it was lucky to shit her pants before going on the slot machines, multiple times , and she wasn't the least bit ashamed...
Maybe she also played craps? edit edit holy skidmark, this escalated quicker than I could down that bottle of laxatives Bad dum
I play poker 2 or 3 times a week at a casino. I've heard horror stories of people being followed to their cars after cashing out big stacks of chips from other players, and it's always something that's in the back of my mind when I leave the casino. Guys watching you from in between machines. Or following you from 20-40 feet back. Or you find yourself running into the same people over and over.
What are things to look out for when leaving the casino with a lot of cash that people might not think about? But seriously, get security to walk you out, were most likely bored and could use something to do anyway.
I'm glad you mentioned that security is available to escort people out. But I can't remember ever self-parking in Vegas. Yea, good point, out casino doesn't even have valet
If you tell the cashier you'll throw a guard 100 bucks to walk you to your car after hitting a jackpot they'll drop what they're doing. To bad i would be fired for getting tips.
How long does it typically take for security to respond to an incident in a casino? In my casino, everything is within a 120 second running distance, not including the parking lot.
If certain codes are called, we are supposed to full out run to the area in the call. Usually multiple guards are at the area within 10 seconds.
What sort of issue would call for a full out running response? Fights, fires, medical emergencies.
Any chance that there would be areas lacking in guards when they are called to move to an area like that? Sometimes guards group up and talks or get called away on calls, so yea, some areas are without guards for short periods of time.
But were just a radio call away.
Are you trained for medical emergencies? Yes.
Theft? Someone stealing all the black chips at a table? Yes, that as well.
Public coitus, in front of The Wizard of Oz: Ruby Slippers slot machine? In front of the willy Wonka machine.
EMT or just First RespondeFirst Aid? First Responders.
How'd you get the job? any intense training involved??? Had some self defence/anti-gun/knife training, same thing police get. Other than that, criminal record check and 3 separate interviews.
Out of interest how big are you? Been thinking of getting into security. I'm 6'3" and just under 250lbs but not fat except a slight belly but always feel small next to other security guys. I suppose that is just psychological on my part. Im fat bro, 5 '10, 270 lbs. I carry it well though, so I look formidable at least. I think you would do fine.
Do you have any part of looking out for people counting cards or trying to swing the betting? If so, how do you catch them and what do you do? Dealers and pit bosses have more training in that than I do, but i still receive some. So i hang around tables for a bit seeing if i can see the patterns. I also try and track people who throw down a lot of money in a short amount of time, money laundering etc.
What are the most effective casino game(s) to play in order to launder money? Slots, they are watched the least.
Actually, this is not true. I am a IT architect for a major casino company and we have software that monitors and flags trends that money launderes have been known to do. Cool, and now I know.
Somebody is crying at a slot machine. You approach them and they say "I lost spent my last $100 dollars and now I can't afford groceries or rent." What do you do? Tell them they are an adult and should have made better decisions with their money.
Do you get perks that come with a job at the casino? Perks? Hurm... I get to see the shows for free if im working during them, get to meet some D-list celebs. Working security, im not expected to be nice and cheery all dat. Thats always nice.
I actually really like corner gas. ID love to meet them. They were good, down to earth people :)
Well they are still Canadian Television stars, I can't imagine that type of fame is really enough to make them all that removed from the average person's lifestyle. True true.
Do you know what the most a dealer has been tipped where you have worked? Person got suited triple 7s on blackjack table, won 50k, gave the dealer 5k.
Ever meet the owners? How are they? They are nice people, in appearance, but being so filthy rich makes them disconnected from their 30K a year employees.
Also, all that CCTV footage of every single square inch of the casino floor and hotel must take up a lot of memory... How long do you hold onto it? And memory? I have been in the main IT room before, the memory tower is about 6 feet tall, and 1.5 feet wide on all 4 sides. Looks like a computer tower but way bigger.
I once got into a fight at a las vegas casino over a guy who tried to rob me. After the cops came, I was let go because "the other guy didnt want to press charges". Before the cops left I was advised by the hotel that I was banned from the property and then issued a trespass warning by the police before i had by picture taken by some cool looking 3d camera, and then unceremoniously shoved out a back door into the 7am vegas daybreak with no sunglasses and told "good luck, your friends can collect your stuff from your room" My question is (and i think i know the answer)... are these bans for life? For first time offences, not usually, they usually start if with a 3 month ban and move up from there, with lifetime bans occurring about 4 steps down the line.
So it's pretty much like WoW bans then. Correct.
TIL some casino security guards possibly play WoW and knows the banning rules in the virtual world. They're human after all! Im playing the new southpark game now, but ive dabbled in wow.
Ever catch anyone having sex in public? In their cars outside the casino, yes.
Have you fallen asleep? Once, on a grave shift, for 5 mins. Didnt get caught!
How many times do people try to cheat and get caught? Ive been working at the same place for about 6 months, ive personally witnessed around a dozen people get busted in my 40/hour a week window.
Sometimes its hard to prove, but we usually catch them pretty quicky, as surveillance, security, and the dealers all have specific training
How many people do you think you may not be catching? Would someone with inside knowledge be able to circumvent security? I bet we are missing half of all cheaters.
And yes.
Let's say I just left the casino with a few grand of winnings and I get mugged on my way to the parking lot or in the parking lot. Would the casino security assist me, beat down the perp, return the money, or is it in the police hands at that point? Where is that particular line drawn? We would do everything in our power to apprehend the perp, but if he gets away, its the police
Slots.. I've always wondered can they really be 'tightened' on the weekends or during certain hours? I've heard people say slots are 'tight' in casinos but 'loose' on cruise ships. I know you're security but maybe you know- is this a thing? Its a myth, the programming is set by the programmer where the machines are built, the casinos have no way to "tighten" or "loosen" the machines.
They run off a random number generator that is highly illegal to tamper with.
LOL no worries ... I was just at my old property a couple days ago (I am a slot machine vendor tech now) and two former security guys are now slot techs. A barback and a shipping receiving guy both are also on the slot projects team. So maybe one day you'll get there if it appeals to you! Totally, I would have to start at the bottom as part time again, but im looking for a way into either live games or slots.
Whats the most youve seen heard of someone losing over one night? Roulette, around $50k. Thats the most ive witnessed.
You must work in Oklahoma. In Philly, I watched a guy lose $50k in two shoes of blackjack. In Vegas people lose far more than that. Nope, worse, Canada.
What are you trained to do? I call surveillance, they roll the cameras back to see if you did MJ on site (in your car etc), if you did, we serve you a year long ban card.
What do you actually do? If you didn't, surveillance would watch you until you leave the premises, and if they seen you use or sell the drug, we would approach.
What are you trained to do? I do what i am trained to, im that guy.
What rules are there about denying guests entry to the casino? Of course probably loud and overly-rambunctious people are probably denied, but what about chronic gamblers, similar to how a bar will kick out drunk people? We kick out people who are intoxicated, high, underage, or have been previously banned.
We do keep an eye out for habitual gamblers and offer them some help, but its not strongly enforced.
What are the vault codes? u know, for educational purposes. The password is password.
I'm a security guard, just a contracted one that goes to multiple sites, and one of our sites seriously has an alarm code of 1234. Fuck, Fort Knox up in there...
What weapons are you carrying at all times? What's the worst way you be had to use your weapons? Handcuffs and a radio, thats all.
I used handcuffs a handful of times. But i usually just use take downs, pressure points, and holds to subdue people.
I work for one of the most successful casinos on the east coast as a valet. You guys wear these giant red jackets so we (valets) call you guys the red coats. We generally objectify all other departments though, because we are separated outside, ourselves. How do you guys feel about the other departments? We wear black blazers.
Food and beverage people are drama factories, slot people are prudes, matience people are generally pretty chill, and security people sleep around and are chill.
Those are the general stereotypes
You forgot table games... the prima donnas of the casino. Oh Geeez, how could I forget!?
Is this a tippable situation, and if so how much? At some casinos yes, at most, no. 1% of winnings seems to be the norm.
Win 30k? Tip $300.
At my casino anyhow.
Have you seen any ocean's 11-esque stuff happening? Not anywhere close, a few people counting cards is the closest ive gotten
Remember, the good ones don't get caught. Yepp.
How do you tell the difference between a genuine lucky streak and card counters? (assuming card counting works) Card counting works, and there is a very specific pattern of betting that occurs, we watch them for a couple hours , sometimes over multiple days to make sure the pattern is consistent and nit just luck.
What things to do you look for that tip you off that people might be cheating? I cant tell you specifics, but specific betting patterns, also any attempt to alter or mark cards/chips
Ever worry about lung cancer? All the time, doctor says i may as well be smoking with all the smoke i inhale.
I was at a casino last weekend, and the guards looked bored as fuck, how do you stay awake? On slow days? Just stay on your feet and keep walking, or go through the log program and memorize faces of banned people.
I'm confused, are people smoking in the casino or are you outside around it a lot? There is a seperated part of the casino blocked off by a kinda-air lock. So one smoke free, one smoke filled.
Ever broken anyone's hands with a hammer or taken some to the desert and made them dig their own grave? No.
So, I'm guessing you and Joe Pesci aren't friends. He is my favorite character actually.
I am a professional card counteadvantage player. Often if I feel my action is getting heat I keep an eye out for security guards standing directly behind me. When that happens I cash out immediately and leave to avoid barring. Is this necessary or if surveillance considers me a threat would they just have you give me the tap on the shoulder instead of lurking behind me? They dont approach unless absolutely sure, and security only watches until they have a hunch you are cheating, then they call surveillance and walk away, then the cameras eye is on you until you leave.
Thanks for the fast response. One more question if you don't mind- I have the right to refuse to produce my identification to surveillance or security but you have the right to escort me out... However you have the right to check my ID for legal gambling age purposes. If suspected of advantage play do they instruct security to check patrons' ID under the guise of age verification in order to have security relay to surveillance the patrons name so they can search their database of advantage players? I believe I have experienced this. We will ask questions under the guise of a underlying motive, yes.
And yes, we want you out of the casino if you are advantage playing, so it is win win for us, you dont show ID, we kick you out, you dont show ID, we have your name, then kick you out.
Be reminded, you are still in the database as "unknown" if you dont produce ID, with pictures and video showing what you look like
Thanks for the info. Any really unusual characteristics they teach you to look for when identifying advantage players? At my level of training, defensive body language when i get close, and them generally looking nervous/paranoid
Why would you be nervous when counting cards? You just made a shit ton of money and there's no risk of you getting into any legal or physical trouble. No clue, but some of them are.
Worst reaction of someone losing their money? Punching a machine and breaking a $3200.00 touch screen monitor
Has anyone ever done something so crazy that the casino had to make a new rule because of them? Hurm... ill think about this and get back to you.
Oceans eleven, possible? Eh, not really, that movie was based off of really old casinos, the new ones have better security measures.
What's the biggest, most creative cheating attempt you've ever seen? Are those grandiose heists you see in movies like Ocean's at least somewhat plausible? Nothing clever really. A guy was convincing senile old people that he knew what machine would pay out, and said they had to pay him half if he was right, no risk, all reward, thats about the cleverest ive seen
Casino worker fist bump! (shaking hands is a no-no) We shake hands, just gotta do the hand flip after.
Do you work for a tribal casino? If so, how do you feel about the preferential placement/treatment of tribal members as employees? Im white, but I dont really mind the preferential treatment, I have seen a lot of racism in my neck of the woods, seems fair they should have a place where they can get a leg up.
So what exactly do you do on a daily basis? Just stand and watch? Or do you walk around? Anything that goes in and out of the casino i supervise , money, contractors, stuff for the vending machine , im there.
When a machine has to be opened for matinence, im there to watch.
When a patron is breaking a rule, i enforce it.
Do you ever play anything in the casino you're security at? Are you allowed to? Not allowed, not allowed in any casino in the provence in fact unless i am working or have special permission
Why are you doing an AMA on mobile? Cuz im at work.
Working hard looking for those cheaters. On his mobile. Correct sir.
Why can't we take pictures in there? We tried to take a group picture in front of slot machines and were made to delete it. If you guys are watching that closely why can't you just use discretion? Its one of those Zero tolerance BS things, I dont agree with it, but i have to enforce it.
Have you had to deal with counterfeit chips recently? They seem to be all the rage in poker tournaments these days, especially since a well known e-commerce site actively has a Chinese vendor selling exact versions of WSOP and WPT chips. Also, do you use RFID? We use blacklights to check, and random some kinda signal that can be picked up, they have been very popular lately, and its really lame. Because they have to go through every chip in the casino when we find one, and I have to stand there and watch for the entire 3 hour process.
This questions kind of a stretch, but have you seen or heard about any crazy ass GTA San Andreas style casino heists? Not in my casino.
An easy way crooks get around this though is by hiring 15-20 people to play for them. I've seen shady looking pimps hand stacks of money to their "workers" and these players don't look any better either. We can catch that at times, a guy constantly handing out money, people playing, cashing out, and handing money back to them, we can sometimes pick up on that.
(Hope you don't mind me adding to your thread, I feel like this is Vacuum repair guy all over again) We had a woman who was having a heart attack and as we were assisting her, another woman reached into the victim's purse and removed an envelope containing about $300. Humanity at its finest. By all means lol, im feeling overwhelmed. Message me for location.
Truth: Link to imgur.com. Source: I too work in casino security. Can confirm, I love that podium.
It's not a podium. It's supposed to be a safe that contains monies, but it really has a little Chinese dude in it that will open the large vault from the inside when they put the safe in there. Ahhh, on mobile, the little pic looked like a podium lol.
Pride and that warm fuzzy feeling of knowing that people like you. Also bragging rights. Sweeet!
